Benefits For Employers

In March 2009, Glasgow City Council officially launched the Glasgow Living Wage, which aims to establish a basic standard of living for employees in the city.  The introduction of the Glasgow Living Wage increased the salary of almost 700 employees of Glasgow City Council and its partners.

The Glasgow Living Wage has been set at £7.20 an hour for 2012/13.  In addition, Glasgow City Council will promote the living wage through its procurement policy, aiming to improve the conditions of workers across the city.

Whilst there are clear benefits to employees, research from other cities who have implemented a living wage has identified benefits for employers including easier recruitment and retention; higher quality staff; better attendance; better productivity, motivation and loyalty; and a better quality of service for customers.

Organisations across the city have been invited to become Glasgow Living Wage employers.  Many in Glasgow are already paying their staff at least £7.20 an hour and the Council would like to recognise those who are whilst encouraging others to sign up.

The Glasgow Living Wage award has been established and will be given to any employer in the city who pays their staff a living wage.  A full list of all participants is published on this website.  In addition, Living Wage Employers will be able to use the GLW brand logo on any merchandise, letterheads etc.  This offers Living Wage Employers good publicity and the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to building a better Glasgow.
